Homeschooling in America has turned a corner. Remember when "homeschool" was a bad word? When people frowned and thought homeschooled children were a little odd? That still may exist in some circles, but it appears that more people recognize that homeschooling is beneficial and sometimes better for kids than public school.
This newfound public realization has put many families in a quandary, specifically many women. Do they quit their jobs in order to homeschool their children? Is that what being a mother is? or is that what good Mothers do? This question has Moms scrambling to reassess their thinking and many are now dreaming of staying home. But the question is, just because homeschooling is beneficial and good, is it right for you? - obviously, there are some people who SHOULD NOT homeschool, but how do you know if you fall into that category? When making this decision there are some things to keep in mind.
1.) Do you have mental issues or emotional problems that prevent you from being aware, responding appropriately, or keeping a schedule? If this is the case, then homeschooling may not be the right choice for you.
2.) If you have physical illnesses that will prevent you from being able to monitor your child's activity and scholastic progress, then homeschooling will be a burden and more than likely will put your children at a disadvantage.
3.) If you are too busy to plan or monitor your child's activity and scholastic progress. Then think carefully about what homeschooling would mean for you. Some women are trying to do double and triple duty by working and homeschooling their children, but they may also have other responsibilities that make it impossible to homeschool effectively.
4.) If discipline is a struggle for you and your children, to the point where they do not obey or follow directions, then homeschooling will be a lesson in frustration until this issue is solved.
If you are struggling in the homeschool process, just know that there are so many options for families here in Florida. You do not HAVE to homeschool in order to give your child the best education you can. There are private schools, charter schools, Christian schools, and everything in-between. Do not allow yourself to feel guilty if Homeschooling is not working out for you, it is much better to realize that and adjust than to persist in something that may hurt your child's education instead of help.
This is very interesting information. Thank you for your insight.
